At Scott's Cove: 10/23/10 Part One

Gordon, Elbert, and David Gladden, along with Frank Antes and Tom Evans, work on the Ida May on a cool but comfortable fall Saturday. Wesley Price supervises. Everybody works on a different part of the boat. Frank and Gordon tackle the starboard sides and Tom paints the starboard rails that will go back on the boat once the sides are complete. Elbert and David, to their dismay, find that the stem piece in the bow is rotten. The stem is (at the bow of a vessel) an upright into which the sidetimbers or plates are jointed. Notice David taking the trailboards off the Ida May in preparation of working on the bow. Now that the trailboards are off her, the Ida May has no name plate to distinguish her from the other skipjacks. It was symbolic and sad, but in the meantime, we will spruce up the old trailboard with a new paintjob and get ready for when the boat returns to the water.

At Scott's Cove: 9/25/10 Rotten Wood & Rusty Nails Pt 1

Gordon, Elbert, and David Gladden, Frank Antes, and Tom Evans continue to tear out rotten wood and rusty nails from the starboard side deck and railing of the Skipjack Ida May. Most of the railing will be salvaged, but the wood under the railing is rotten as it can be.

Gordon, Elbert, and David Gladden and Tom Evans work underneath the Ida May, adding six inches to the keelson. As you can see, this kind of work is not very comfortable, especially on Elbert and Gordon, who are no spring chickens. Hard on the knees and elbows.

Gordon and David Gladden tear out rotten boards from the port side of the Skipjack Ida May. Notice the Skipjack, Fannie Daugherty, on blocks in the distance, readying herself for the labor day races. Gordon is reminded of his own childhood in Chance by seeing three little boys crabbing from the dock. Although much is changed since Gordon was a little boy, some things remain the same.
