Skipjack Ida May at the Choptank Heritage Races 9/24/11

The Ida May won second prize at the Choptank Heritage Skipjack Races Cambridge MD 09/24/2011. There was little wind and it was more of a drifting race rather than a sailing race, but it was fun and exciting all the same.

The Gladden family set the mast of the Chesapeake Bay Skipjack Ida May!!! She really look like a skipjack now and is well on her way to being able to sail for the Labor Day Races in Deal Island.

The mast for the Chesapeake Bay Skipjack Ida May was delivered to Chance MD. The mast is as big and heavy as a telephone pole and the boom is a substantial piece of lumber, too.

At Scott's Cove: 7/30/11 Launching of the Ida May

The Gladden family finally launched the Chesapeake Skipjack, Ida May, on 7/30/11. This was a long time coming. Six years ago, we had pulled the Ida May out of the water to do annual repairs, thinking that we only had nominal repairs to do. We tore out rotten wood and kept tearing out rotten wood until there was no original piece left on the boat! Six years later, we finally finished the rebuilding of the Ida May. Next will be to set the mast and the boom.

At Scott's Cove: 5/28/11 Log Rail

Frank Antes and Gordon, Elbert, and David Gladden work on the starboard side log rail of the Chesapeake Bay Skipjack, Ida May. We fear that bending the salt treated lumber so far will crack the wood in half, and that's just what happens: the board busts, explodes really. We lag and clamp the board to try to bend it, but a whole morning's work goes up with a bang. Also, notice the footage of the barn swallow that lives in the dock next to ours.
